Excellent Entry Level Home File Storage Solution
If you are looking to set up a home file server for back-up or media streaming, this is a great choice. It would be difficult to build something comparable at this price. It comes without an operating system so you can load any OS you want. There are many free ones available, for example FreeNAS or Linux Red Hat. It will also work with Windows 7 or the various Microsoft Server systems. It is easy to install the hard drives and to get the main board out if you would like to upgrade the memory or fit a low profile graphics card. It was very easy to set up FreeNAS on it and the performance good. I recommend upgrading the RAM so that you have at least 1GB per 1TB of storage to be managed. Although HP only certified it up to 8GB RAM, I am running 16GB without any problems.
STRENGTHS:
Great price. Ease of operation. Versatility.
WEAKNESSES:
Only 2GB RAM.
BEST USES:
Home file storage solution. NAS box.
