Lifetime warranties and American-grade support - gotta love it !
I bought one of these from Nivo back in May 2012. I feed all the IT components in one room off it : ADSL modem, switch, WLAN access point, printer, cordless phone etc.
The phone line was routed through the "telephone protector" port before splitting off to the DSL modem and cordless phone base station and that's how it was operating .. until today! (Feb 2014).
An hour or two ago we had a huge storm with lots of lightning and .... there was an audible "Crrack!!"" at the wall socket(s) and a loud lightning crash outside - a very close strike.
All the connected equipment survived but on closer inspection I found that the "telephone protector" port on this PBT5-SA has failed. After re-routing the phone wire straight from the wall socket, everything came up normally !
After looking around at APC's website, I established that this product actually has a *lifetime warranty* (Nivo says 1 year). A quick call to the local toll-free support number connected me to a very pleasant american lady at the US EMEA support centre. After exchanging a few details (serial # etc), a new unit is on its way to me by courier in 3-5 days. What an absolute pleasure!
In an ideal world, protective devices should be rated to handle real-world surges without breaking, but given the alternative ... I'm *very* happy that the device protected everything downstream of it, and given the warranty and replacement policy, I have no problem if the protector gets fried doing its job!
R300 very well spent.
UPDATE: The replacement device was deivered by courier 1.5 working days after I reported the claim. Outstanding service!
STRENGTHS:
Lifetime warranty !!! No-quibble replacement policy.
There is also a 5-year "data recovery" policy (effective in SA) that covers you in case you suffer data loss as a result of a power surge or lighting strike.
Sturdy, good features, looks good. LED that tells you if the mains protection is OK and if the power socket is correctly wired.
WEAKNESSES:
Surge-protection components on the phone-line part of the device may be under-rated for South African conditions. Mine got fried doing its job.
The wall-mount scheme (keyhole slots) is not that effective - the unit has a tendency to fall off the wall.
Other than that, great.
BEST USES:
Single-point protection for 5 AC devices and a telephone line (especially if you have ADSL)
SIMILAR ITEMS OWNED:
Surge-protection products for Clearline (South Africa)
RECOMMENDED ITEMS:
APC surge protection! (To be honest, Clearline's "connected equipment" insurance policy is also pretty good)
The best surge protector for almost everything
Bought a couple of these and almost my entire house runs off it. It protect and looks stylish while doing it !
STRENGTHS:
Reliable
