Why do I need Illustrator CS5?

Illustrator CS5 lets you create graphics and type in vector format. Vector graphics are resolution independent, which means you can resize a graphic from a business card to a billboard and it will maintain its high quality. Illustrator also lets you create assets that can easily go out to different media: print, web, interactive, video, and mobile.

I own an older version of Illustrator. Can I upgrade to Illustrator CS5?

If you own Illustrator CS2, CS3, or CS4 you can upgrade to Illustrator CS5 for US$199. Older versions of Illustrator are not eligible for upgrade. I own an older version of Illustrator. Can I upgrade to an edition of Adobe Creative Suite® 5? If you own Illustrator CS2, CS3, or CS4, you can upgrade to the following Creative Suite 5 editions:

• Design Standard
• Design Premium
• Web Premium
• Production Premium

There is no upgrade path from older versions of Illustrator to Creative Suite 5 Master Collection.

Can I upgrade from Macromedia® FreeHand®?

If you own a registered copy of FreeHand MX, 10, or 9, you can upgrade to Illustrator CS5 for US$199. This FreeHand upgrade is available for volume purchases and licensing.

I have lots of old Illustrator files. Can I still open and edit them in Illustrator CS5?

Yes. Files created in versions older than Illustrator CS require that type be updated to a newer format before it can be edited, but Illustrator handles that automatically.

Are Illustrator CS5 files compatible with Microsoft Office?

Illustrator provides a Save for Microsoft Office menu option, which saves files in PNG format for use in Office. Files saved in native Illustrator file format cannot be used in Microsoft Office.
